What is Indoor Air Quality?

Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) describes the condition of the air inside your home and how it directly impacts the health and comfort of your family. It is a measurement of airborne contaminants and ventilation effectiveness.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, indoor air can be two to five times more polluted than outdoor air. Common factors that define IAQ include:

  • Pollutant Levels: The concentration of contaminants like dust mites, pet dander, mold spores, and particulate matter.
  • Chemical Presence: The accumulation of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) from paints, cleaning products, and new furniture.
  • Environmental Factors: Humidity levels (ideally kept between 30% and 50%) and carbon dioxide concentrations.
  • Ventilation: How effectively your HVAC system filters and recirculates air while bringing in fresh outdoor air.

Maintaining high IAQ is essential because poor air quality can lead to immediate symptoms like eye and throat irritation, headaches, and fatigue, as well as long-term respiratory and cardiovascular issues.
